the region

Andalucia is the most southerly point in Europe and enjoys all year sunshine. Click here for more details about the climate.

Alhaurín el Grande is situated in the Andalucian province of Malaga, approximately 20min inland at the foot of the northern slopes of the Mijas mountains. Its name originates from "Garden of Allah" and the town offers wonderful views over the Guadalhorce Valley with abundant orange trees and olive groves.

Alhaurin was re-conquered by Christian forces in 1485, when it was incorporated into the Castillian crown. During the 19th century this was the place where the richer families of Malaga city had their leisure homes. Neolithic, Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Arabic settlers have all left their mark on the area. Today, Alhaurin is a prosperous and lively commercial centre which has retained its Andalucian charm. In particular, Alhaurin and the surrounding area boats some excellent and very reasonable restaurants and cafes where locals can enjoy a wide variety of dishes from tapas to pizza and even Chinese.

One of the town's best attractions for visitors is the Moorish Cork Mill - El Molino Morisco de los Corchos.

There is an abundance of rugged, unspoilt countryside surrounding Alhaurin which will suit walkers and mountain bikers, although not during the summer months! Several stables nearby offer horse riding excursions to lakes and waterfalls in the mountains. For the more sedate visitor why not pass the time visiting the many small fincas and country restaurants, sampling local food and delicious Spanish wines. For a special occasion there is the restored Arab fortress, the Castillio de Monda with breathtaking views from its cliff top location and a menu to match.
